This music was inspired by the tale of Cleopatra and the Temple at Dendera where she was woshipped as Pharaoh. The fabled Cobra of ancient Egypt was the royal snake of the Pharaohs. She was said to protect the king by spitting venom and flames at his enemies. Listen to the serpent as she stalks her prey. ‘Cobra’ has an Arabic 'eastern promise' quality.

8. HALL OF WHISPERS (3:56mins)

This music was inspired by the mysterious and shadowy Festival Hall at Karnak Temple. If you listen carefully you may just hear the priests whispers amongst the sounds of the dancers sistrums. A romantic and mesmerizing flute music that has a very unique style and sound which is further enhanced by the soothing tones of strings and mysterious whispering vocals. There are a variety of other interesting sounds, which create melodic beats within an almost continuous flow of airy chords.

The ‘Harem Treachery’, which involved the stabbing of Pharaoh Ramses III, was the inspiration behind this song. You can almost imagine the perpetrator committing the act and then hiding away in the deep shadows of the palace. This music is a powerful and emotional experience.

Many of the songs included in the CD are very soothing and relaxing, whilst others are romantic and sensual, or powerful and emotional. Songs such as 'Tears of Isis' and 'Hall of Whispers' are mood-elevating and caress the mind, whilst the Neo-Classical style of 'Desert March' and 'Exodus' are very impressive orchestral arrangements. The ambient sound of the title piece, 'Eternal River', will whisk you away to the mysterious and haunting sounds of the Nile, allowing the mind to drift and promote relaxation.

Produced especially for Ancient Nile by Steven Wood this magic has been created using various keyboards, instruments, piano and synthesizers which brings you some very impressive arrangements. Steven's music ranges from romantic and passionate, to bold stimulating orchestral pieces.

I have classified the Eternal River album as 'World Music' but it could just as easily be classed as 'New Age-World Music' or 'New Age Music' for obvious reasons. Steven's enchanting sounds, includes piano pieces, such as 'Immortal Spirit' and tunes with wonderful unusual accompaniments, such as 'World of Anubis' that will transport you to the eerie underworld of the ancient deity. The CD is a creative variety of passionate, soothing, relaxing tunes, some quiet and melodic, whilst others such as 'Treachery' are bolder and emotional, creating an aural journey of anticipation for the listener.

I take my copy with me whenever I visit Egypt and listen to this exceptional collection of inspirational music as I cruise the Nile as it helps to evoke a sense of times past.

Some tunes are calm and peaceful, with a celestial quality, whilst others such as 'Cobra' offer an Arabic 'eastern promise' quality.
